Creators and stars, Nirvanna the Band the Show

They might seem like a couple of hapless wannabe rock stars in a crappy non-band called Nirvanna, doing anything to land their dream gig. But in real life, Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol are the creators and stars of Vice's first scripted series for its Viceland channel. The show, which premieres this fall, builds on Johnson and McCarrol's web smash Nirvanna the Band.

Actor, The Other Half, Orphan Black

A conversation with Tatiana Maslany, star and producer of The Other Half, which screens on Oct. 1. Maslany stars in the Canadian science fiction thriller series Orphan Black and has achieved widespread critical acclaim for her performance, winning two Critics' Choice Television Awards, a TCA award and three Canadian Screen Awards in addition to receiving Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG nominations.

Writer/producer Marti Noxon talks about working on hit shows, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Mad Men. She's the co-creator of Lifetime's highly acclaimed, Peabody Award winning show UnREAL, which offers a captivating behind-the-scenes look at the production team and consultants on a Bachelor-like series.

Skate, Ski, Ride | Creator Talks

Join skateboarding legend Rick McCrank, co-owner of Antisocial skate shop and star of the new Viceland series Abandoned and Jordan Manley, creator of A Skier's Journey, shot in the steeps of China and Iran, for an evening of screenings, drinks and a celebration of skating, riding, skiing and the filmmakers from Sea to Sky country who dare to go further and document it all.

Join Vancouver executive producer Simon Davis Barry (Continuum) for a screening of the premiere episode of Van Helsing, the hot new Syfy series about a female vampire hunter on a mission to save the world, followed by a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this sure-to-be-blockbuster series. Van Helsing was shot in Vancouver this past year. Presented by ACFC West

Bullying: Cast & Crew of Milton's Secret | Topics

Based on the book by international bestselling author Eckhart Tolle, Milton's Secret takes on the topic of bullying and how parents and kids alike can use mindfulness as a resource to respond to the challenges of stress and life. Director Barnet Bain will join cast members Mia Kirshner, David Sutcliffe and William Ainscough to discuss this subject.

Impact: Manufacturing Meets Environment | Topics

Roger Williams, director of RiverBlue, follows international river conservationist Mark Angelo to explore one of the world's most polluting industries: fashion. Denis Delestrac, director of Freightened: The Real Price of Shipping, takes us through his investigation of the many faces of worldwide freight shipping and sheds light on its consequences. Roger and Denis will join up to talk about the impact of manufacturing on the environment, examining its effects above and below the waterline.

Generation Z: A Workshop for Young Filmmakers | Workshop

Whether you're using an iPhone or a DSLR, young creators have grown up shooting, editing and producing all on their own. This session will show young filmmakers how to enhance their directing and storytelling skills, scale their productions up and work with a crew – in front of, and behind, the camera. Guests include: Randall Okita and Tania Thompson(The Lockpicker), Joonas Rutanen (I Love Anna), Emma Samms (The Law of Moments)

A first-of-its-kind, one-day event that will lay the groundwork for showcasing Vancouver as a world-class destination for sustainable screen-based industry production. This will be a day of inspiration, where we learn about trends and the next phase of opportunities to further sustainable production. Chris Carter, writer and director of The X-Files, will open the day followed by executives from the Hollywood studios and representatives from global and local sustainability leader organizations. Presented by CMPA-BC in partnership with Creative BC and and Western Economic Diversification (WED), VIFF Industry Exchange provides attendees with high-level education and business development opportunities from global industry leaders in the ever-evolving digital entertainment market. The forum is a mustattend for executives and creators seeking to stay abreast of the most recent changes in the marketplace or intending to pivot to newer platforms, as well as for newer digital creators wanting to expand their audiences and business practices. The program includes keynote talks, B2B meetings with development executives and a series of discussions on the most recent transformations in the global marketplace, including: what the latest models are, what the newest platforms are buying and how to package your projects to sell.

Expanding Frontiers in Storytelling: Virtual Reality
Tackling the Next Big Thing in Consumer Entertainment
TUE. OCT 4, ALL DAY
Presented by Creative BC, the Expanding Frontiers in Storytelling series will transport attendees into the new mediums of VR and AR, with key insights from some of the most respected futurists in the world, as well as conversations and demos from leading VR creators, companies, technologists and distributors. This is a must-attend series for anyone looking to understand or hoping to capitalize on this transformational medium, and is completely appropriate for everyone from new filmmakers to the most experienced.

The program includes a keynote from Ted Schilowitz, the Futurist at 20th Century Fox Studios and Chief Creative Officer at Barco Escape, who is helping guide the studio and film industry into the next breakthroughs in storytelling for mass audience consumption; as well as a series of talks, panels and presentations from leading VR companies, distributors and creators, with highlighted case studies, and important discussions on business models, distribution and looks at where the new opportunities are. Live demonstrations across the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Gear VR will also be running throughout the day for participant sampling.

From 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., the decibel level rises as live music from local acts mixes with some of the most innovative sonic and visual experiences. VIFF HUB is a meeting and exhibition space open in the evenings of the festival giving festivalgoers a venue to engage in dialogue over drinks while experiencing innovative music and film collaborations. Experiences include music events that augment the film festival programming, live performances of award winning soundtracks, some of Vancouver's top progressive electronic music and art exhibitions, screenings of the best local YouTuber videos and curated music video nights.
